Acupuncture treatment is a highly effective, evidence-based approach that we offer as a stand alone treatment of often integrate it with physiotherapy techniques to provide effective pain relief and manage inflammation. This treatment is particularly successful for: Chronic Pain Management: Offering long-term relief for back, neck, and joint pain. Tension-Type Headaches & Migraines: Helping to reduce the frequency and intensity of symptoms. Trigger Point Release: Utilising fine needles to deactivate 'knots' in the muscle that can cause referred pain. Arthritic Pain: Assisting in the management of discomfort associated with osteoarthritis.
Acupuncture treatment is one of the many skills utilised in physiotherapy as an integrated approach to chronic pain management, inflammation, and enhancing the body's own healing chemicals to aid recovery and improve rehabilitation. The application of acupuncture within physiotherapy is supported by well documented clinical and research evidence.
Physiotherapists utilise acupuncture treatment, backed by robust research and evidence, as a method of enhancing chronic pain management through the stimulation of the brain and spinal cord to produce natural pain-relieving chemicals such as endorphins, melatonin for sleep, and serotonin for well-being. These elements support the body's healing process and provide effective pain relief, serving as a precursor for other manual or exercise therapy. Caroline & Rachel are members of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP) who regulate and set standards for Physiotherapists who carry out Acupuncture.
The concept of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an ancient system of written scripts dating back to 1000 BC, centered on the holistic approach to treatment and recognising the body's capacity to return to a balanced state of health when provided with the correct stimulus.
Achieving health and fitness involves balancing various forces within the body; two commonly referenced forces are YIN (negative) and YANG (positive). The treatment with acupuncture aims to restore all body systems to a state of balance (homeostasis). This process begins with a comprehensive physiotherapy assessment to identify the source of the imbalance and the appropriate acupuncture points needed to address it, facilitating the body's return to a state of health both physically and mentally. The body possesses a remarkable ability to "self-repair." By employing acupuncture alongside traditional physiotherapy techniques, the repair mechanism is enhanced, resulting in improved recovery times.
The acupuncture needle stimulates the flow of QI, which circulates through channels or meridians within the body. QI flows through deeper organs while also connecting to the superficial skin. In a healthy body, balance exists between these systems. Both superficial and deeper energies can be influenced by the stimulation of specific acupuncture points. When injury, disease, emotional trauma, or infection occurs, the natural flow of QI within the meridians and organs may be disrupted, leading to altered flows that can cause pain and inflammation, or deficits in QI that may result in weakness and exhaustion. Stimulating relevant acupuncture points can alleviate stagnation, reduce excess, or increase QI in specific areas or organs, thus helping to restore normal QI flow and balance. The effectiveness of TCM is well researched and documented.
